Hands-on with Heavy Duty Machinery: What to Expect from Mechanics in Motion

Those joining Mechanics in Motion can look forward to a comprehensive journey through key aspects of the automotive and trucking industry. This will include the company’s rich history, internship programmes, operational insights, and diagnostic procedures aimed at finding the perfect parts for customers. Participants will also explore engine components, truck overhaul techniques, diagnostics and repair methods, along with body maintenance and restoration practices, offering a well-rounded, practical learning opportunity.

Mechanics in Motion will begin on May 5, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM with an engaging session led by Louis Industrial. This workshop will highlight the company's history and its role in supporting Jamaica’s trucking and industrial sectors. Attendees will gain valuable insights into supply chain operations and parts diagnosis from the technical sales team, showcasing how product knowledge and field experience support efficient service delivery. The session will also introduce LIG’s internship programme, providing a pathway for students and aspiring technicians to explore future opportunities within the industry.

Parts exploration, led primarily by Dayton Parts, will be held from May 5–7, 2025, running from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This workshop will cover critical safety and maintenance protocols for essential components such as suspensions, tie rods, and kingpins. Participants will engage in a hands-on learning environment, working directly with parts supplied by Dayton Parts. Technicians will guide attendees through real-world applications, diagnostic techniques, troubleshooting scenarios, and demonstrate recommended procedures for installation and maintenance, ensuring that participants leave with practical, field-ready skills.

Powerful Braking and Engines, led by experts from PAI Industries, will offer participants valuable insights into proven techniques for maintaining heavy-duty engines and braking systems. The session will emphasise both performance and longevity, equipping attendees with key strategies for maintenance, inspection, and system optimisation. Practical demonstrations will feature a range of vital engine and drivetrain components, guiding participants through common applications, troubleshooting practices, and installation methods. This session will be held on May 8–9, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Delcour’s Truck Overhaul, taking place from May 10–17, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM, offers participants an immersive, hands-on experience with step-by-step technical involvement in rebuilding a truck from the ground up. Hosted at Delcour Logistics, a facility engaged in logistics, truck maintenance, and fleet management—this session will guide attendees through the full transformation of a struggling engine into a fully operational, road-ready machine. Participants will work alongside skilled technicians and mechanics, gaining practical knowledge in engine repair, system integration, full vehicle restoration techniques, and the long-term upkeep of heavy-duty trucks. Additionally, participants will gain real-world exposure to the demands of heavy-duty vehicle operations within a working logistics environment, offering insights into vehicle maintenance cycles and the critical role trucks play in supply chain success. The workshop also includes an up-close exploration of popular truck brands and opportunities to engage directly with professional drivers and maintenance teams.

Automotive Art, scheduled for May 15–16, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, will offer participants an informative session covering key areas of vehicle maintenance. The programme will include an introduction to Valvoline and Stewart’s Automotive Group, a detailed breakdown of lubricants, including the difference between synthetic and semi-synthetic oils and guidance on selecting the best options for different vehicles. The session will also explore the importance of coolants, the role of automotive chemicals and additives, and provide a basic overview of auto refinishing techniques. To top it off, participants will receive practical tips on basic car care and tire maintenance, ideal for keeping vehicles in top shape.

Inside Peter’s Garage, happening on May 21–22, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, is a dynamic session designed to provide participants with hands-on mechanical experience through product disassembly and assembly. Set in an authentic garage environment, attendees will work directly with components from powerful trucks. Guided by seasoned professionals, this session offers a close-up look at the inner workings of heavy-duty vehicles, strengthening technical skills and building mechanical confidence through practical, tool-in-hand learning.  

The Mechanics in Motion initiative provides participants with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the intricacies of the automotive and trucking industries. Through collaborations with industry leaders and experts, attendees will advance their technical skills, deepen their knowledge, and develop a comprehensive understanding of key concepts and systems. Each session is carefully structured to enhance participants’ practical and theoretical knowledge of, equipping them with the confidence to pursue future opportunities in the trucking sector.
